Blue
Grass Boys
This is the very room where, in
1963, Bro. Bob Jones walked into the room after hearing me play the piano
and asked me if I would be interested in playing for a quartet,
because he was trying to get a quartet together, since the one he had was
disbanding because the other men in the quartet were graduating from
Lexington Baptist College and were going other places.
I told him that I didn't think I
would be interested, because I did not play that kind of music. He
asked if I would be interested in just practicing with them, and I have
been practicing with them for 43 years now.
Bro. Jones and I are the only two
who have sung consistently throughout all of these 43 years, but Bro. Bob
Carpenter, standing behind me as I sit at the piano, has begun to sing
with us again from time to time. We enjoy having him join in with us
with his wonderful tenor voice.
Bro. Demas Brubacher is the
gentleman on the far right of the picture, and he sang with the group for
about four years until he and Bro. Carpenter graduated from the school,
also.
In 1967 Bro. Jones invited Bro. Carl
Morton and Bro. Bobby Lakes to sing with the group, and we traveled
together for well over 30 years. Carl Morton is pastor (2006) of
Berry Baptist Church in Berry, Kentucky. Bobby Lakes is pastor of
Faith Baptist Church in Versailles, Kentucky.
In 2005 and 2006 First Baptist
Church of Harrison, Ohio, sponsored a reunion of this quartet. Along
with me, Bro. Bob Carpenter, and Bro. Bob Jones, Bro. Steve Kittle sings
with us.
I will have more stories of some of
the adventures of our travels as a quartet in other chapters of my life.
Stay tuned.
