My Parents
My
father was the son of Benage Wolfe, who was married to Phoeba Larkin.
My
mother was the daughter of Frank Blackburn, who was married to Ona Wells.
I
am so thankful for my parents. They were very Godly people.
They believed in God very strongly, and they taught us children the Bible
in a practical way as well as in a literary way. They encouraged us
to be faithful in serving the Lord Jesus Christ and to bring glory to Him
in our lives. In this picture, taken in Covington,
Kentucky, about 1953-54, you can see the old cars with the sunburned
windshields. I am sitting in front of my father, and my foster
brother, Jerry Blackburn, is sitting in front of my mother. He was
only eight months older in age than I was.
We took trips to the "city"
from time to time for me to go to the clinic or to visit my two aunts and
their families, who both lived in the house in the left of the picture on
Craig Street in Covington, Kentucky.
My
father was hurt at work in the late 60's, and his injuries were serious,
and these injuries caused him to have heart disease. He worked at
the Pendleton County High School for a while when I was a student there,
and I enjoyed staying after school with him. He would clean the
building while I went to meetings for the yearbook staff and the student
council.
This is my
father
with his friend, Frank Dance, working at the school. Because he worked there, I was able to go to all of the
home games played by our basketball team. In 1962 Pendleton County
won the state championship.
Everyone loved my father, and
he was well known around town. Many of the students knew him,
because he drove the school bus as a substitute driver.
My father eventually became
very ill with his heart condition, and he had to stay home all of the
time. He was 53 years old when on April 28, 1970, he passed away.
My
mother was so lonely after my father's death! She was so close to
him, and they were together all of the time. But she was strong, and
God gave her grace. She lived to be 80 years old and died in 1997.
